Our Vision

“Downtown” Dale Brown has been granted many privileges that only a few people have ever
experienced. A number of these privileges are a direct result of a supportive community and
the opportunities afforded him through the gift of basketball. In the 1991-92 season while at
The University of Kentucky, he played in college basketball’s greatest game against the Duke
Blue Devils in the 1992 East Regional Finals. That next year, he played in the 1993 Final Four
game against The Fab Five of Michigan Wolverines. After completing his collegiate career, Dale
signed a free agent contract with the Sacramento Kings and played four years of European
professional basketball. Once Dale Brown finished his professional career, he coached for ten
years at various levels. He truly understands that he never would have acquired those privileges
if not for the strong community that supported him.

Over the past eight years, Dale Brown has returned to his hometown of Pascagoula, Mississippi
to host the Dale Brown Boys and Girls Basketball Camp utilizing his personal resources. Year
after year, Dale Brown witnessed the continuing deterioration of his once vibrant community.
Based upon his assessments, he observed the youth were falling through the cracks at school,
being lost to the streets and seeing preventable health issues afflict the lives of so many people.
The most alarming observation was that there was no place to go for physical activities,
mentorship or tutoring. In contrast to the inner-city areas such as Pascagoula and Moss Point,
the suburbs have a full array of youth sports, physical fitness and academic programs with
strong financial support. Urban youth, especially urban girls, have been deprived of the
opportunity for physical activity, coaching, being part of a team, learning skills, academic
preparation and substantial time away from "negative recreation" (i.e., drugs, violence or
sexual activities).

Dale decided to relinquish his personal career pursuits and devote the rest of his life to help
create the necessary changes for his community. He brought his vision into fruition by forming
a non-profit organization named The Dale Brown Sports and Academics Academy. This academy
is a non-profit organization that will provide year round physical fitness programs and
educational services to youth and adults in the Jackson County area in Mississippi. It is the core
belief of the academy that all children must have the opportunity for a successful start in
education and sport regardless of age, race, gender, family composition, income or community.
In response to this significant disparity in the Jackson County area, Dale Brown Sports and
Academics Academy has been created to provide the sports and education programs necessary
for Jackson County youth and young adults to have equal opportunity for organized sports and
academic preparation.
